Unlock PDF

Remove supported PDF restrictions and encryption locally in your browser, using the password you supply. It never bypasses an unknown password. Your PDF and password never leave your device.

Runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded.

This tool runs in your browser. Please enable JavaScript to use it — the guide below explains what it does.

Note: the unlocking runs in your browser with JavaScript. With JavaScript off you can read this guide, but the tool controls will not appear.

Remove supported PDF restrictions locally

This tool removes PDF encryption and supported restrictions entirely in your browser, using the password you supply. When you provide the correct password, the PDF is decrypted on your device and an unprotected copy is produced. For PDFs that carry only usage restrictions (an owner password with no open password), those restrictions can be removed directly. It never bypasses, guesses or cracks an unknown password — if a PDF needs a password to open, you must enter the correct one.

How to use the Unlock PDF tool

  1. Add your PDF — drag it onto the drop area or click to browse. The tool shows whether it is encrypted.
  2. Enter the password if the PDF needs one to open. Only the password you type is used.
  3. Click Unlock PDF. The tool decrypts the file and checks that the result opens without a password.
  4. Download the unlocked PDF.

How it works

When you add a PDF, the tool checks whether it is encrypted. If it is, it asks for the password. On unlock, it decrypts the document in memory with your password and re-saves it without encryption, then reloads that output to confirm it genuinely opens with no password before offering the download. If the password is wrong, or the PDF uses non-standard/third-party DRM that cannot be decrypted, the tool says so clearly instead of producing a broken or fake file. Your password is used only for this operation, held only in a local variable, cleared afterwards, and never stored, logged or sent anywhere.

Benefits and use cases

  • Stop re-typing a password — make an unprotected copy of a file you already have the password for.
  • Remove usage restrictions — where a PDF only limits printing or copying, lift those limits.
  • Honest behaviour — it never pretends to open a file you do not have the password for.
  • No account, no upload — confidential files never leave your computer.
  • Works offline — once the page has loaded, no connection is needed.

Limitations

You must know and enter the correct password — there is no password recovery, cracking or bypass, by design. Standard PDF encryption (RC4 and AES) is supported; PDFs protected by non-standard or third-party DRM systems are not, and the tool will report that rather than produce a broken file. Only unlock PDFs you have the right to access. Very large PDFs use more memory while they are processed in the browser.

Privacy

Everything runs locally in your browser. Your PDF and your password are never uploaded, stored, logged or shared, and the tool makes no network requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can the Unlock PDF tool actually do?
When you supply the correct password, it decrypts the PDF in your browser and saves an unprotected copy. For PDFs that only carry usage restrictions (an owner password with no open password), it can remove those restrictions directly. It works entirely on your device.
Can it open a PDF if I do not know the password?
No, and it will not pretend to. It never bypasses, guesses or cracks an unknown password. If a PDF needs a password to open, you must enter the correct one; without it, the file cannot be unlocked.
Is my PDF or password uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is decrypted entirely inside your own browser, and your password is used only in memory for that operation. Nothing is uploaded, and the password is never stored, logged, saved in your browser, or sent over the network.
Which protected PDFs are supported?
Standard password-encrypted PDFs (RC4 and AES, the common PDF encryption schemes) are supported when you provide the correct password. PDFs protected by non-standard or third-party DRM systems are not supported, and the tool will tell you clearly rather than producing a broken file.
Is removing a PDF password legal?
Removing a password from a document you own or are authorised to access — for your own convenience — is a normal use. You should only unlock PDFs you have the right to access. This tool simply decrypts using the password you already hold; it does not defeat protection you are not entitled to remove.
